OPEN CALL: Stories of Řetízkárna Through the Eyes of Students

Are you interested in modern history, documentary or media production, journalism, or perhaps psychology? Do you want to gain valuable experience by participating in an extraordinary project that will uncover forgotten stories from the Jáchymov region in the 1950s? Join us and be part of our unique project!

Řetízkárna, a former uranium locker room from 1950s in Jáchymov’s Rovnost mine, is the only remaining site that continues to memorialize the crimes committed by the communist regime in the Ore Mountains region during the 1950s. At that time, POWs, political prisoners, and others held in the Jáchymov camps were forced to extract the area’s rich uranium deposits. Harsh working conditions and unscrupulous treatment caused the prisoners to suffer terribly. The stories of those who survived these horrors are often forgotten, or simply not known to begin with, which is why the project „Stories of Řetízkárna Through the Eyes of Students“ aims to record this history and bring it to the attention of the wider public.

Who we are looking for:

  • university students from the Czech Republic and Germany
  • those interested in modern history, documentary film, psychology of trauma, oral
    history, etc.
  • young journalists and filmmakers who want to improve their practical skills
  • anyone else with a clear and articulable motivation to get involved

What we offer:

  • collaboration with renowned journalists, documentary filmmakers, and other experts
  • participation in thematic workshops and audiovisual shoots
  • the opportunity to see behind the scenes of historical events through the stories of
    eyewitnesses
  • individual guidance and practice with material outcomes

Project format:

  • several physical and online meetings (first event on the weekend of November 2-4th, 2024 in Jáchymov)
