We want to connect young people from the Czech Republic and Germany, but above all to highlight topics such as freedom of expression, the right to demonstrate and solidarity across generations and borders. BEGINNING OF THE SUMMER SEMESTER IN HRADEC KRÁLOVÉ
On Thursday 9th February we started the summer semester of the practical journalism course at the University of Hradec Kralove with an introductory lesson! For the third time we will offer students weekly virtual debates with Czech journalists. Starting next week, we will be joined by students from Palacký University Olomouc. We are looking forward to curious questions from the students! Would you also like to participate in the online lectures?
Together with the non-profit organization Fak(e)ticky, we organized a follow-up media workshop at the grammar school in Chomutov. The local pupils got the opportunity to finish their texts, which they had already started working on before Christmas. The workshops are held within the framework of the Youth Voice in Media project, which is supported by the Erasmus+ programme from the House of Foreign Cooperation. It aims to motivate young people to take an active interest in civic engagement. We are looking forward to the students' outputs!
The concentration of misinformation is heightened ahead of the presidential election. The editors of CT 24 Newsroom focused on this topic and last week visited a media vigilance seminar we organized in Klatovy. Why are seniors more vulnerable to false information? How often does "fake news" reach them? These questions were answered not only by the lecturer Zdeněk Svoboda, but also by the participants themselves.
In cooperation with Palacký University in Olomouc we publish Incubation Newspaper! The winter semester included a journalism symposium in Olomouc, during which students attended practical workshops. Based on the experience gained, they then prepared their outputs. In addition to the written texts, the newspaper also features podcasts and a video report. We wish you a pleasant reading!
Our media caution seminar in Klatovy was also visited by the staff of the Czech Television regional editorial office. Nowadays, before the second round of the presidential election, it is especially important to check the sources of information and to be careful about the spread of misinformation. We thank all those who do so and our speakers and guests for a fruitful discussion in the beautiful premises of the Klatovy town library!
In time for the presidential election, we are publishing a chapter from the fairy tale book Sophie and the Magic Candy Store 2. It was written by our collaborator Tomáš Nídr and published by the Journalistic Incubator at the end of the year. The story is about the fate of the strong-willed mayor Juraj BureŠ, who wanted to rule the whole country. We wish you a good reading and a happy hand in voting.
During presidential elections, misleading or even false information is spread even more than usual. It is therefore important to be able to evaluate which reports are true and which sources to trust. Why the debate about the pitfalls of disinformation is crucial or how to critically accept news is just a small part of our seminar in Karlovy Vary, which was attended by Daniela Tunklová, editor of the regional news service of ČT, and Zdeněk Svoboda, an experienced lecturer in media education for seniors. We thank our speakers and the audience for the fruitful discussion and we look forward to the next seminar in Klatovy next week!
THE SECOND PART OF SOFINKA AND THE MAGIC CONFECTIONERY IS OUT
Promises are to be kept (especially) at Christmas! So the Journalistic Incubator brings you the promised reading from the journalist Tomáš Nídr - the second part of Sofinka and the magic confectionery. We report that the fairy tale book is out of the printer as of today.
The Journalism Incubator is a proud media partner of the "Rescue the Řetízkárna" project. The initiators are trying to save the ruins of the former chain dressing room near Jáchymov. Among the celebrities who have decided to support the rescue of Řetízkárna in the public space and give their face to the initiative are Vendula Fialová, Michal Holán, Miroslav Nosek, Sara Polak, Emma Smetana, Vladimír Škultéty and Jan Zadražil.
We did it a second time! Thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, the Journalism Incubator raised enough funds to print the second part of the fairy tale book Sofinka a magical confectionery. Reporter Tomáš Nídr wrote the book for his daughter and his wife Claudia Llauca Chávez took care of the illustrations. We are working on getting the publication to the contributors before Christmas. Thank you for your contributions!

JOURNALISTIC SYMPOSIUM IN OLOMOUC
Lectures, talks and discussions on current topics in contemporary journalism. The Department of Media and Cultural Studies and Journalism, Faculty of Arts, Palacký University has prepared a two-day special programme for its students in cooperation with the Journalism Incubator.
DO YOU WANT TO BE PART OF THE JOURNALISM INCUBATOR?
Do you want to write and publish? Are you interested in journalistic practice but don’t have enough training? Are you interested in our activities?
WE ORGANIZE A COURSE OF PRACTICAL JOURNALISM
Registration for the course is ongoing. The current topic of journalistic practice is the crimes of communism and the impact on Czechoslovak journalism.
Many of you know me as someone who has been hanging around the former communist labour camps (not only) in the Jáchymov region for over twenty years, popularising the memories of political prisoners and devising various educational programmes to do so. In addition, I connect novice journalists with experienced ones in the registered association Journalist Incubator. I am now combining the two activities into one, and I most cordially invite you to be a part of it. In our lectures and public events with the Political Prisoners.cz Association, we will focus, among other things, on the national cultural monument, the Red Tower of Death, which has been quietly crumbling near Jáchymov for the last 30 years, only to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019, and now a desperate attempt is underway to save it.
Tomáš Bouška Founder of the Journalism Incubator
HOW DO OUR SUPPORTERS SEE IT?
I believe that the initiative will contribute to the birth of personalities who are interested in serious, honest and fact-based journalism without any ideological motives. And hopefully the Journalism Incubator will help in the development of young people who may also choose science journalism or Science Communication, which still has a lot to improve in the Czech Republic.
Martin Rychlík Editor in chief of Charles University media
The Journalism Incubator is a great venture that I will follow and support with enthusiasm. My teacher at the ‘Wasp’, a journalist from the daily Právo, knocked me over the head with an article in the first class, telling me not to write anything interesting in the future, because ‘even a cockroach in soup is interesting’… Thanks for all the dialogues with people who love their work, they are extremely inspiring.
Iveta ŠkrabalováDeputy head of support of systems and content of New media in Czech television
Dobrých zpráv není nikdy dost. Dejme jim šanci, aby se vylíhly v Novinářském inkubátoru.
Tomáš NídrNovinář na volné noze žijící v peruánské Limě
Hardly anyone does journalism training in the Czech Republic anymore, especially of the practical, hands-on variety. Given the rapidly changing media environment, that makes the idea of an incubator not only needed to fill the gap but also an urgent priority.
Jeremy DruckerExecutive Director and Editor in Chief Transitions (TOL)
Prehistoric man was set mostly on survival and therefore, of all the stimuli, responded exclusively to immediate danger. Little has changed since then, and nowadays we don’t have to constantly worry about being swallowed up by a hungry animal around the corner. So why constantly feed on bad news? Personally, I welcome the idea of a journalism incubator and the benefits of good news in particular with open arms.
Alena CicákováFounder of podcast Epimoni-ac
Jedině profesionální, vzdělaní a zkušení novináři mohou obstát vůči této cílené snaze média zdiskreditovat a znedůvěryhodnit.
Daniel AnýžReportér Aktuálně.cz a Hospodářských novin
You can read dozens of textbooks on how to do journalism. But that doesn’t make you a good journalist. They say that the best way to learn is by doing, and that’s doubly true of the media. That’s why support for young journalists from those older and more experienced is invaluable. I believe that the Journalism Incubator will cultivate future top journalists.
Vojtěch KrasnickýEditor in chief of web Seznam Zprávy
It can be beneficial for aspiring journalists if they also get a glimpse into the world of graphic design and typography to get an idea of how to work with texts and photographs in magazines or newspapers. The result should be quality content and form. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the Journalism Incubator and I am ready to make my small contribution.
Ondřej KafkaEditor in chief of magazine Font and chairman ol Kafka Design
An incubator is a place where a premature baby becomes a full-fledged human being, or a facility where ideal conditions are created for a reaction. So let the Journalist Incubator be both in the best sense of the word.
Lubor ČernohlávekDeputy Editor in chief of Téma
There are many different incubators and accelerators for different fields, but there has been a lack of them in the field of journalism. That’s why it’s great that it has finally been created, and I believe it will help young journalists grow. We all need quality, honest journalism that helps us navigate today’s complicated world and, in addition to analysing problems, offers proven solutions to them.
Lucie ČernáVedoucí programu solutions journalism, Transitions
Beginning writers usually write the most honest texts unencumbered by the need to earn a living, by life’s hardships, but also by experience. There are few platforms like the Journalism Incubator where students and more experienced writers can come together on collaborative projects and for mutual benefit.
